Higher education is not literally a recent issue in Iran. During Achaemenian Dynasty (330-559 BC), the necessary requirement to get employment in the government offices was having higher degrees in law. Also, some majors such as medicine, mathematics, geography, music, astronomy, and military sciences were taught.
During Sassanid Dynasty, Jondishapor University attained universal fame. Therefore, many people around the globe came to that university to study philosophy, astronomy, theology, law, and medicine. After the revival of Islamic civilization, numerous schools were established in Islamic countries. In those times, Azerbaijan, as one of the oldest Iranian-Islamic civilizations, played an important role. To this end, many great scientific institutions were founded there.
Rab’-e Rashidi, as one of the greatest and widely-valued educational centers, was established in Tabriz. This higher educational center, many sciences were taught, so much as a science-technology town contained five sectors including: hospital, instructors’ housing complex, mosque, library, mint, house of dervishes, industrial complexes, textile plant, and paper-making factories.
Meanwhile, the greatest observatory of the world was established in Maragheh, one of the beautiful cities of East Azarbaijan province. Many scholars around the globe gathered to study and search not only astronomy but also many other related sciences in the center.The observatory contained about 400,000 books.
The importance of Tabriz and Azerbaijan has been preserved during the recent times and Tabriz is well-known as the first in the region. This fame is due to the industrial, literary, political, and cultural briskness of this city. The first cinema, photographic studio, municipality, disabled children’s school, kindergarten, guesthouse, and higher education centers were founded in Tabriz.
The University of Tabriz, out of public demand, with its brilliant history, was founded in 1947 having two faculties of Literature and Medicine. The University of Tabriz is actively running at the moment with 20 faculties, 10 research centers and research groups, 5 scientific pivot, more than 700 Academic staff members, 24,000 students, 1000 non-teaching personnel, 128 PhD. majors, 187 MA majors, 102 BA majors, 3 non-continuous BA majors, and one associate degree.
The University of Tabriz, with its unique scientific facilities in the northwest of Iran, provides its researchers with advanced labs in different fields, having more than 300,000 hard copy books, 800,000 soft copy books, more than 20 journals, and membership of E-Journals. Up to now, some 3 professors of this university have been named the everlasting academic figures of the country, some 17 have been introduced as the unique professors and researchers of the country, and some 5 have been called as the scholars of the Islamic world. Moreover, a great number of the graduates of this university hold key positions in politics and the executive.
The University of Tabriz, in addition to its scientific and research activities, has had an important and invaluable key role in expanding higher education in the northwest part of the country. The university of Mohaghegheh Ardabili, the university of Maragheh, and the university of Bonab have been dissected the University of Tabriz. At the present time, the University of Tabriz has established its branches in the cities of Marand, Ahar, and Miyane. In a similar way, the University of Tabriz has set up an international Campus in the Free Trade Zone of Aras (Jolfa).

It has an active relationship with different and important universities’ of the world such as France, Germany, Japan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Cyprus, Thailand, and so on. It has also signed more than 50 treaties with those universities. Additionally, it has an active presence in the International Association of Universities, International Universities Confederation, and Association of Caucasian Universities.
The University of Tabriz contains about 600 hectares. It has a beautiful, peaceful scenery having about 50,000 trees. Inside the university campus there are various facilities including a shopping mall, bake shop, laundry, post office, photographic studio, mosque, cultural and art centers, cinema, permanent fairs, invaluable museums, stadium and advanced gyms, travel agency, clinic, consultation center, pharmacy, nursery, and botany garden. Thus, as a small town, the University of Tabriz provides and offers all the necessary equipment and means and in this way fulfills the students’ primary needs and wants.
The University of Tabriz, which has numerous gyms for different sports, experienced trainers, a stadium holding 10,000 people, and an indoor swimming pool, is one of the unique universities of the country boasting about its sport facilities. In this way, almost all the university stakeholders including students, academics, personnel, and their families use these facilities for their pleasure and health.
